Mycotoxin

Molds produce a toxic secondary metabolite known as mycotoxin. One species of mold can produce several kind of mycotoxin. Also same specific kind of mycotoxin can be produced by many different species of molds. The reason for production of mycotoxin is yet not known. As such they are not needed for development and growth of molds.  Mycotoxin helps molds to further proliferate mold colony as it weakens the receiving organism.

The concentration of mycotoxin increases to a dangerous level when mold population proliferates into large colonies.  The severity of toxin produced by molds varies greatly with the intrinsic and extrinsic surrounding environment.

Possible effects of mycotoxin on plants and animals

The severity of effect to a large extent also depends on the susceptibility of the organism.  Some people with a weaker immune might be more sensitive to the bad effects of mycotoxin.  Some mycotoxin is harmful even to other micro-organisms. Penicillin for example is harmful to other fungi and even bacteria.

Mycotoxin often enters in food chain. They generally remain in the food chain even after extremetreatment of heat or freezing. They can enter in the food chain by possible consumption of fungal infected crops or humans can directly acquire them through mold colonies inside their house.
